    The West China will be developing under a new era with network,knowledge based and globalized economy. The target of the national strategy is focused on decreasing the regional differenciation,spreeding the adjustment of economic structure, exchancing the friendship between all of the nationalities in the whole mother country.After the efforts of scientific surveying and exploration in the past 50 years, the geo information source in West China may be very useful for the regional planning or engineering design after the updating by the new satellite remote sensing data, GPS and GIS. Under the support by 'informatization', the 'modernization' of the West China will read the success step by step more quickly.

    THe author proposed three suggestions on the development of West China. First, editing and analyzing the rich geo information about the natural resources and environment in the West China provides basic scientific data and facts for the West China development. Second, the development strategy and measures should be suitable to the local reality of vast area and outstanding regional differences. Third, it is important to make full use of second Eurasian continental bridge.

    Since 1990', the spatial information techniques such as Remote Sensing (RS), Geographic Information System (GIS) and Global Position System (GPS) have been improved increasingly in basic theories and techniques. They are making more and more effect in all kinds of way. Marine nature reserve is the important part of marine project. Its developing is limited by lagging management. So modernization of management is imperative under the situation. Handling "3S" techniques to develop Marine Nature Reserve Spatial Information System (MNRGIS) is the availability step to this trouble. This paper discusses the features of marine nature reserve and the application of spatial information techniques in marine, then emphasize on discussing the framework, key techniques and database of the initiatory design of MNRGIS. Moreover it also brings forward some problems about MNRGIS.

    Firstly, on the basis of analyzing various index systems for sustainable development, index system for sustainable development of Yellow River Delta is distinguished into index system I and index system II in terms of the level of the index aggregating information. The index system I corresponds to database and the index system II corresponds to model base. Then, the advantages and disadvantages of the comprehensive models for sustainable development such as multiple criteria decision making, risk decision making and system dynamics are discussed and a framework of integrated model for sustainable development of Yellow River Delta is proposed. Finally, research progress of the integrated model is reviewed and further study is prospected.

    In this paper, according to the theory of "Self excitation Threshold Autoregressive Model", a new model-the objective numeric prediction pattern as well as "on line prediction model" is established by analyzing the situation of the earthquake activities for many years. The reliability of the model has been tested by the practical earthquake data in china mainland since 1980. The statistic indicates that the largest error of yearly position characteristic number ( M i ) is 0.3, the average error is 0.12, when predicting the future earthquake tendency by the model. Therefor, the model can reflect the natural characteristic and rules of the variation of the earthquake tendency objectively, and predict the future earthquake activities preferably. The model provides a scientific way to predict the earthquake tendency objectively and quantitatively.

    Cartography is one of the important disciplines in the Knowledge Innovation Project in Institute of Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences. This paper analyses and discusses some of the problems in the disciplinary planning of Cartography in Knowledge Innovation Project. At first, the authors expounds the guidance of disciplinary planning, i.e., inheriting the sound foundation of discipline from Dept. of Cartography, tracing the international focuses and latest developments, surpassing and innovating, integrating the research of theory, technology and industrialization. Secondly, the authors discuss the state objective and scientific objective of Cartography, and then related deeply main innovation points and frontal scientific problems of Cartography, and also deals with the organization system for innovation bases vs. other units. Finally, the future of Cartography is foreseen, including the multi-level innovation results and the intersectional discipline for Geo-sciences.

    Graphic symbol is the language of map. In quantitative map, graphic symbols lay particular emphasis on the expression of the quantity features of geographical object to reveal its process of quantitative changes and law of developments. The design of graphic symbols should not only pay attention to the expression of content but also lay stress on the expression of form. The dynamic of graphic symbols improves the interest and visualization of maps on the expression forms of the graphic symbols. This paper expounds the concept of the dynamic of graphic symbols and its expression forms in quantitative map from the visual sense to enrich the forms of the map expression and improve the power of expression of the quantitative map.
